It is with great excitement and anticipation that I announce the opening of registration for the 2014 NABMSA Biennial Conference, 31 July-2 August 2014 on the campus of the University of Nevada at Las Vegas. Anthony Barone, local arrangements liaison, has been diligently working to welcome us to UNLV, and Roberta Montemorra Marvin and the program committee have developed a program that includes wonderful papers and unusual presentations. Our keynote speaker will be Michael Pisani, whose latest book—Music for the Melodramatic Theatre in Nineteenth-Century London and New York (Univ. of Iowa Press)—will be hot off the press in July 2014.
We are providing an accommodation option of on-campus housing. Of course, there are a number of other places to stay in Las Vegas, and Anthony will soon provide a list of options. Travel from the airport to campus is probably best by taxi (Anthony estimates about $12-15 per trip), but city buses are also available should you wish to go that route. Our banquet will be at Gordon Biersch and transportation to that event will be provided. We will be hosted at an opening reception by UNLV, and we are also invited to a concert that is part of the Green Valley Chamber Music Festival (no charge). The Executive Board is also trying to arrange a musicale event, and there might be an optional visit to a British pub should we feel the need.
